Data Privacy Day (known in Europe as Data Protection Day) is an international event that occurs every year on the 28th of January. The purpose of Data Privacy Day is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
The Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data was opened for signature by the Council of Europe on January 28, 1981. and we are celebrating 30th anniversary of the basis for data protection in Europe and beyond.
Last November, the Republic of Serbia signed in Strasbourg a Protocol amending the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Individuals concerning Automatic Processing of Personal Data (Convention 108), which was adopted by the Council of Europe on 18th of May 2018 (Protocol amending the Convention for the Protection of Individuals about Automatic Processing of Personal Data, CETS No.223).
The objective of the Protocol is to modernize and enhance Convention 108, considering new challenges of protecting regarding the processing of personal data. The Protocol also aims to ensure that data protection principles are applied to all processing activities in a single regulated society, including national security, as well as respecting the independence of personal data protection authorities and strengthening the legal basis for international cooperation. The Republic of Serbia was the 36th country to sign the Council of Europe Protocol.
